Southwestern Christian University President, Dr. Ed Huckeby, was recently elected to serve as Chairman of the President’s Council of the Oklahoma Independent Colleges and Universities (OICU) for the 2012-2013 academic year. Other officers include Vice-Chair, Dr. John deSteiguer, President of Oklahoma Christian University, and Secretary/Treasurer, Dr. Robert Duncan, Jr., President of Bacone College.
The OICU was founded in 1998 for the purpose of supporting and promoting the values of independent higher education and especially to support and promote independent colleges and universities in Oklahoma. The OICU seeks to serve as an efficient and effective vehicle for the business community, foundations and individuals to support Oklahoma independent higher education. Additionally, the organization seeks to interpret the aims, functions and needs of the member college and universities to the public, to the legislature, and to federal and state agencies so as to enhance and assist consultation, collaboration and cooperation among its members relating to academic programs, research, services, and community service. The organization monitors national issues through membership in and affiliation with the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU).
Institutions represented by the OICU include Bacone College, Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College, Mid-America Christian University, Oklahoma Baptist University, Oklahoma Christian University, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University, St. Gregory’s University, Southern Nazarene University, Southwestern Christian University, and the University of Tulsa.
