Southwestern Christian University has appointed Dr. Spencer Ledbetter to serve as the new Dean of the School of Adult and Graduate Studies, bringing two decades of academic excellence to lead the rapidly expanding school.
“Dr. Ledbetter impacted my life profoundly when I was a student at SCU,” stated David Burrows, Chairman of the SCU Board of Regents. “He is a master teacher and lecturer, but most importantly, he has mastered the art of opening a student's mind to the truth of the gospel. His appointment as Dean of the Adult and Graduate Studies program is welcomed with great hope, affection and anticipation.”
Dr. Ed Huckeby, president of SCU, affirmed, “We are excited about the level of spiritual commitment, intellect and enthusiasm which Dr. Ledbetter brings to this position. I am confident that the Adult Studies and Graduate programs will grow and prosper under his leadership.”
Ledbetter holds a Bachelor of Arts in Religion, Economics and Communications from Oberlin College (Ohio); a Masters in Theological Studies from the Harvard School of Divinity, and a Doctorate of Philosophy from the Oxford Graduate School.
“As the Global Ministry Center liaison to our institutions of higher education I applaud Dr. Ledbetter’s selection,” said Bishop J. Talmadge Gardner, Executive Director of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church’s Discipleship Ministries Division. “His impeccable academic credentials, pastoral experience and proven/long-standing reputation as an intellectual and spiritual giant in Christian higher education will serve Southwestern well. We welcome Dr. Ledbetter into our IPHC family and entrust him with our most valued possession – the hearts and minds of our future.”
Ledbetter’s appointment was made following a nationwide search for candidates to fill the position that had been held by Dr. Terry Tramel for the past two years. Dr. Tramel will return to the classroom as a full-time teacher in both graduate and undergraduate classes, as well as resume his lifelong calling as an evangelist.
“The hiring of Dr. Spencer Ledbetter signals a banner day in the history of the Graduate School at Southwestern Christian University,” said Dr. Tramel. “Dr. Ledbetter has the highest academic credentials, the strongest commitment to biblical truth, a passionate zest for ministry, and the added gift of resonating with all people. I am excited about the future of the Graduate School under his leadership. I commend the hiring of Dr. Ledbetter and pledge to him my support and assistance in the days to come.”
Dr. Ledbetter has served as a long-term teacher and mentor to hundreds of SCU students over the span of the past two decades. Additionally, Ledbetter served as Dean of Students and Vice-President of Academic Affairs at the American Christian College and Seminary (Okla. City) for 11 years. He has also served as a part-time or adjunct professor at Mid-America Christian University (Okla. City), Hillsdale Freewill Baptist (Moore, Okla.), and Oklahoma City University. He currently pastors the Cross of Calvary church in Oklahoma City, where he has been since 1994. Ledbetter has also ministered through radio and missions to East and West Africa, as well as the Middle East, Bangladesh, China, and Europe.
Dr. Spencer Ledbetter will be assuming command of the School of Adult and Graduate Studies at an exciting time as two new programs have been added: the Master of Arts in Theological Studies and the Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Development.
