A veteran leader in education for nearly 30 years, has been hired by Southwestern Christian University as its new Director of Admissions.
Rita Palmer, who has served the past nine years as the Superintendent of Meeker (Okla.) Public Schools, officially began at SCU on March 23. She replaces Mike Stovall who stepped down from the position earlier this year.
“Rita has many gifts and abilities. We are excited to bring her to Southwestern Christian University and to lead our Admissions' team,” said Brad Davis, Vice-President of Student Life.
A native of Claremore, Palmer graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1986 with a degree in mathematics. She later obtained her master’s degree in counseling and administration from East Central University.
Palmer taught at a number of schools in Oklahoma before moving to Meeker with her husband, Robert, in 1999. At Meeker, she began as a counselor before elevating to the role of high school principal and then superintendent in 2006.
Palmer’s son, Logan, is a junior at SCU and a member of the baseball team under coach Joe Blackwell. Her son’s connection with Blackwell, the school’s former admissions director, helped open the door for his mother.
“Logan has had nothing but great things to say during his time here” Palmer said. “I’ve been looking to do something different and leaned on God to put me in a place where I could make an impact on kids. I talked with Mr. Blackwell and he encouraged me to apply. The staff in the Office of Admissions is a great group of professionals and I look forward to working with them to serve our students.”
