Southwestern Christian University held its annual Alumni and Friends’ Weekend on November 11th and 12th
Alumni and Friends had the opportunity to view the newly added Southwestern Showcase on Friday evening after kicking off the festivities with a dinner. The name ‘Showcase’ does an exceptional job of speaking for itself as it displays a number of excerpts out of musicals, plays, and operas performed by SCU students and friends under the direction of SCU’s Ray Ballew. The highly regarded Southwestern Christian travelling vocal group OneVoice also took the stage to perform a number of hits for the crowd.
“We had a great response from alumni about the Southwestern Showcase,” stated Jessie Burpo, Director of Alumni Relations. “We plan on adding it to the agenda next year as well.”
A breakfast and class reunion time was scheduled to start Saturday’s activities, followed by a Singing Reunion, which has become a favorite highlight of attendees at the homecoming events.
The 65th annual Feast of Ingathering was the emphasis of the weekend. Presentations included The Alumnus of the Year Award, which was received by David Oxley, and the Legacy Award which was presented to Dr. Dan Beller. Oxley is a current resident of Oklahoma City and served on the SCU Board of Regents for 15 years, while Dr. Beller is a current resident of Tulsa and has plucked the heartstrings of Southwestern Christian alumni and friends throughout a number of decades. Dr. Beller’s impact at SCU is so immense that he was named as the first recipient and the inspiration of the newly proposed Legacy Award that from now on will be known as the Dan Beller Legacy Award.
The weekend was closed out with a pair of home basketball games against Saint Gregory’s University highlighted with the crowning of SCU student Abigail Palacios as the 2011 Homecoming Queen.
The 2011 Alumni and Friends weekend was a great success for Southwestern Christian University, attracting around 200 participants at the events.
“The 2011 Alumni and Friends Homecoming Weekend was a huge success,” confirmed Burpo. “We were able to reconnect with old friends and let them know about all of the great things going on here at Southwestern Christian University.”
