In May, the athletic department at Southwestern Christian University completed its fourth annual mission trip to the country of Colombia.
The trip has been lead each year by SCU Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Mark Arthur.
“Five years ago the Lord birthed in me the idea of taking a group of SCU athletes on a mission trip to Colombia, South America, and to use athletics as the tool to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ,” Arthur said. “Each trip has been incredible and the Lord keeps birthing new ideas of ways we can bless the people of Colombia.”
This past year 23 SCU student-athletes, along with seven coaches & faculty members, and SCU President Dr. Reggies Wenyika traveled to Barranquilla and Cartagena, Colombia. SCU alumnus Rev. Justin Blankenship also traveled with the team and preached at several youth and church services.
“On this trip, a normal day consists of two school visits,” Arthur said. “We open our time at each school with a chapel service where the SCU athletes have an opportunity to share there faith through personal testimonies. We spend the rest of the time teaching the Colombian children fundamentals of the games of basketball, volleyball, baseball and soccer. Many of these kids never get the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of these sports, so it’s a very exciting time for them. In the evenings, we are normally in a youth/church service or doing an athletic training session with a local club team”
According to Arthur, the team was able to work local teachers in addition to to their work with children.
“This year we added new element to our trip,” Arthur said. “While the coaches and athletes were playing with the kids, Dr. Wenyika and the SCU faculty members were doing teacher training with the school leaders and teachers. This was a huge success and also a great time of ministry. “
The SCU team also had the privilege to visit the Help Me Live School.
“We spent four hours just loving and playing with the children and had the opportunity to pass out toys to all 150 students,” Arthur said. “We were also able to purchase 80 new chairs for a church in Nelson Mandela, a province on the outskirts of Cartagena.”
SCU’s first trip to Colombia took place in the spring of 2012 with 12 student-athletes.
“On that first trip, I was amazed to see how God used these students and there testimonies to impact and change the lives of the Colombian students,” Arthur said. “I was even more amazed at the transformation that took place in the lives of our SCU athletes.”
