Southwestern Christian University celebrated its 62nd annual Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 5th, as SCU students walked the stage to receive their diplomas and ‘turn the tassel’, marking the close of a chapter as an SCU student.
The event was attended by a standing-room-only audience in the auditorium of OKC Faith Church, who graciously donated the use of their facility to alleviate spatial problems previously experienced in SCU’s Pickens-Springer Gymnasium. Following a moving speech by Dan Roberts, 87 graduates from 16 different programs walked the length of the stage, trailed by Tara Light (Alumna, Class of 2004) with the installment of the alumni.
“Commencement ceremonies are special, as they not only mark the end of one stage of life, but the beginning of another,” stated Dr. Reggies Wenyika, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “It is always an honor to witness and participate in such momentous transitions. I couldn’t help but notice that the atmosphere surrounding this year’s ceremonies was filled with a palpable sense of faith and optimism as each graduate anticipates their next step toward a God-inspired future and destiny.”
The ceremony marked a big milestone for the SCU Tulsa campus as the location graduated its first 13 graduates since its opening in 2010.
“Assisting our graduates and maintaining the Tulsa site has been the most rewarding responsibility I have ever experienced,” stated Lorena Ray, Adult Studies Director at the Tulsa location. “I am proud of each of our graduates and believe great things are in their future. I want to thank each of our adjunct faculty members who exemplify SCU's motto of Scholarship, Spirit and Service.
Graduation weekend is always a highlight of the school year as we celebrate the release of another group of Christian leaders into businesses and ministries all around the world who will impact their world for Jesus Christ.
