Southwestern Christian University student-athletes collected 1,442 cans and other non-perishable food items to be donated to Passion Church as part of the Sooner Athletic Conference’s “The SAC Gives Back” program
The project was designed to allow each of the SAC's 10 schools to partner with a local charity in hopes of creating a positive connection with the community.
SCU had 100 percent participation among its 18 athletic programs during the drive. Men’s track & field collected the most food items at 339. Women’s basketball followed with 321 collected items.
“I’m very proud of our student-athletes and coaches,” Vice President of Intercollegiate AthleticsMark Arthur said. “This is the first time we have done a food drive, and I really didn’t know what to expect. I’m thrilled with the results and thrilled to know we are making an impact on families here in our community.”
All collected items were donated to Passion Church, located at 3301 N. Council Rd. in Bethany, Okla.
“I think it’s a great effort to keep the athletes involved in the community,” lead pastor of Passion ChurchSteve Elysaid. “It teaches them to reach out beyond themselves, especially around Christmas time which a perfect opportunity for something like that.”
According to Ely, Passion Church plans to distribute the food items to needy families in the church as well as to families of children who attend Overholser Elementary School.
“We just appreciate the athletes doing this and thinking about working with a local church to help get it distributed,” Ely said.
Other schools participating in the SAC Gives Back are John Brown (Ark.), Mid-America Christian, Oklahoma Baptist, Oklahoma City, USAO, Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas), Science & Arts of Oklahoma, St. Gregory’s, Texas Wesleyan and Wayland Baptist (Texas).
