SCU Professor Survives Train Derailment
A Southwestern Christian University professor and his wife were unhurt after a freak train derailment in Australia had many passengers wondering for their safety.
Dr. Jim Poteet, and his wife, Peggy, were shaken but escaped without injury after a passenger train headed to Sydney went off the tracks near North Melbourne Station moments after it embarked. The train carried 180 persons.
“All of the sudden there were five or six big bumps, our car leaned over and we were on some type of adventure,” Poteet told Australian TV News Channel 7. “Everybody came on the train to ask if we were okay. Of course, when our car began to lean and they then asked everybody to get out.”
The carriages remained upright. NSW TrainLink and Sydney Trains will investigate the incident.
Poteet and his wife were transferred to a bus where they resumed their travels to Sydney. The couple have been travelling Australia for the last four weeks hosting basketball camps and joining others in missionary work.
Poteet is a Professor of Sports Management at SCU while his wife teaches at Southern Nazarene University.
