Southwestern Christian University students showcased their upcoming theater performance to an enthusiastic and energetic group Friday morning of bright-faced elementary students.
The student cast of “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” delivered an entertaining and pleasing 30-minute sampler to 600 youngsters from Hilldale Elementary School, in the Putnam City School District. The preview was made possible by the community outreach group Jedidah and its leader SCU business professor Cindi Cary
Play director Caroyln Oler said her cast was eager and excited to take their performance to a live audience.
“It’s really important to bring live theater to schools and communities who may have never seen it before,” Oler said. “It gives us an opportunity to humanize a theater experience. Everyday we see theater on television and movies. This makes it really inspiring and tangible because its people who are real, and you can interact with.”
The students expressed their appreciation by laughing, clapping and cheering for much of the performance. Afterwards, the youngsters had an opportunity to ask questions of the cast and meet them in person.
Cary’s group of volunteers, many of which are SCU students, were there to assist in the meet-and-greet. Jedidah is active in the Hilldale school where it offers encouragement to those youngsters who may be from a motherless home.
“There are so many needs here at Hilldale,” Cary said. “So many children without parents, especially mothers go to school here. Our job is to reach out to them, love on them, and give them some special touches. We have several programs we take kids to performances in the summer. This time, we brought the show to them. It is a simple investment that hopefully they will remember fondly for a long time.”
Two public performances of SCU’s “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” are planned. They are Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 14. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Minchew Auditorium. Tickets are available at the door.
