Southwestern Christian University Announces Retirement of President

Bethany, Oklahoma – Southwestern Christian University (SCU) celebrates the retirement of Dr. Tom L. Murrary in February 2024. Dr. Murray announced his plan to retire at the SCU Chapel after serving the institution for a combined 25 years. Dr. Murray marks the conclusion of a remarkable journey that has exhibited unwavering dedication, leadership, and impact within the university community and beyond.

Dr. Murray has proven his commitment to SCU and through unrelenting service. Over the years, Dr. Murray has held numerous pivotal roles within SCU, including Director of Public Relations, Dean of College Relations, Director of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Affairs, Director of Student Development, Director of Admissions, Professor, Chief Operations Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Academic Officer. His profound understanding of accreditation processes, program assessments, business and finance, and strategic planning has been instrumental in positioning SCU as a beacon of excellence in Christian higher education.

As many know, Dr. Murray has not been a stranger to academia, as he has authored two books, "Social Deviance—Street Gangs: The Wind Still Blows" and "The Fire Still Falls." These works exemplify his dedication to scholarship and his commitment to addressing pressing societal issues through rigorous academic inquiry with Pentecostal perspectives.

Dr. Murray was appointed as the thirteenth president of SCU in June 2018. While serving the Lord in his role, he helped SCU make strides in student growth and holistic student development. 

SCU is eternally grateful for the attitude of Scholarship, Spirit, and Service he committed to SCU. His contributions have left an incredible impact on the institution and countless lives have been touched by his vision. A retirement celebration honoring Dr. Murray's remarkable career and legacy was held on February 2, 2024, for the SCU faculty, staff, and Board of Trustees to express their appreciation and best wishes for his future endeavors.
