Competency in the Science of Reading

Overview
The SCU Literacy Micro-Credential is an embedded credential designed to provide pre-service teachers with verified competencies in the effective teaching of reading in the early elementary grades. This micro-credential is integrated into two required courses within the Elementary Education program:

  • ELED 4843: Assessment and Intervention Practices for the Teaching of Reading in Grades K-4
  • ELED 4803: Methods of Teaching Reading in the Primary Grades (Pre-K through 3rd Grade)

 

Through these courses, candidates engage in coursework and applied practice aligned with the science of reading. Upon successful completion, earners of the micro-credential will demonstrate proficiency in:

  • Administering, analyzing, and interpreting a variety of literacy assessments;
  • Designing and implementing targeted, evidence-based interventions;
  • Applying instructional practices that support phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension in diverse early elementary classrooms;
  • Utilizing data-informed decision-making to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.

 

To earn the micro-credential, students must successfully complete both courses with an overall grade of B or higher. This micro-credential fulfills the Science of Reading content requirements mandated by Oklahoma Senate Bill 362 (SB 362), ensuring candidates are prepared with the knowledge and skill necessary to advance literacy development for all students in Pre-K through 4th grade.

 

What will you be able to do with this micro-credential?

  • Understand processes of reading, language, and learning development.
  • Know the roles of all parties involved in the teaching-learning process.
  • Recognize the roles of phonemic awareness and phonics in the reading process.
  • Develop data-informed strategies and reading interventions.
  • Demonstrate effective assessment procedures.
  • Appropriately address reading difficulties.
  • Complete a Science of Reading Research Paper.
  • Earn a B grade or higher in the ELED 4843 academic course.

 

Intended Audience

  • SCU Students enrolled in ELED 4843: Assessment and Intervention Practices for the Teaching of Reading in Grades K-4 academic course and the co-requisite of clinical practice consisting of 20 hours involved in classroom literacy activities.
  • SCU Students enrolled in ELED 4803 Methods of Teaching Reading in the Primary Grades (Pre-K-3rd grade) course and the co-requisite clinical practice consisting of 20 hours involved in classroom literacy activities.
